DIY Educate: a new brand of ART education at Core Gallery

Deptford, London- January 12th 2011 - Core Gallery and Cor Blimey Arts is proud to launch DIY Educate; a contemporary education programme run by artists, curators and other art professionals to encourage artistic development for those seeking to further their career in art.

From peer-led and one to one critiques, professional practice workshops as well as a number of artist’s and curator lectures, DIY Educate provides opportunities to learn, network, share ideas and knowledge, providing impetus for artists to develop their practice. DIY Educate also gives practical guides and resources to help artists survive in an unstable and competitive climate, making the most of their skills.

Jane Boyer, artist and one of the DIY Educators says this about the program, “we are firmly situated in the heart of artistic practice, we are taking our practice and careers into our own hands. We have developed DIY Educate to address issues we have faced ourselves. DIY Educate picks up where art school leaves off. There can be a gap in arts education in terms of professional practice which can leave artists ill-equipped or unaware of the realities of being a successful artist. We are attempting to bridge that gap.”

DIY Educate was also developed to assist practicing artists who are perhaps working in isolation and artists recently moved to London who may have no real support networks . DIY Educate will help these artist to connect with other artists to network and get feedback on their work through peer critiques and tutorials. “It is seven years since I had a one-to-one crit, ( which I had courtesy of Core Gallery ) with someone who was prepared to look at my work and tell me, honestly, what they saw. The connections, sparks, observations that arrived out of that hour will nourish me for a long while yet,” says Annabel Tilley, artist and last year’s Deptford X Fringe Award winner for her piece entitled Drawing the likeness of a brick.

All our workshops and talks will be led by professional established artists, curators and arts practitioners, in cooperation with other arts organizations such as a-n, AIR and Artquest. Artists involved include Graham Crowley, Rosalind Davis, Elizabeth Murton, Nick Kaplony, Andrew Bryant, Jane Boyer, Annabel Tilley, Arnold Borgerth and Rob Turner, amongst others.

The DIY Educate program offers five areas of instruction. They are as follows:

Nuts and Bolts Talks/ Workshops
The stuff they don’t teach you at art school….

A range of workshops designed to develop professional practice; whether it be writing an artist statement, applying for an exhibition, selling work, approaching galleries or increasing an artistic profile. The workshops will also focus on the practical side of surviving as an artist; whether through an arts related job, funding applications, private/public commissions, being a lecturer or delivering creative workshops.

Individual Tutorials

Opportunities to get critical feedback on artwork with established artists or curators. Tutorials will be led by Graham Crowley, one of the most distinguished living painters in the UK today, amongst others. These individual tutorials will help guide participants to consider issues of current critical debate which may have bearing on an art practice.

Engine ChatChat - art critique

Enging ChatChat started in 2007 in the kitchen of Cor Blimey artist and DIY co-founder, Elizabeth Murton, as an informal place to discuss work and get feedback from other artists. It is an opportunity for artists of any discipline to focus on the ideas, content and context of their work.

Curators and Artist Talks

Opportunities to listen learn and take part in discussions about artistic and curatorial processes and concepts. These talks are by established artists and curators from the RCA, Goldsmiths, Wimbledon and Chelsea College of Art as well as International Artists from Paraguay and Brazil.

Practical Workshops
Cor Blimey studio artists run a variety of workshops throughout the year, including photography and painting from Lecturers from the University of Arts London and Goldsmiths.

Cor Blimey Arts, established in 1995, is a registered charity and rents affordable studio space to artists. Core Gallery was established last year in the Cor Blimey Arts studio complex and since its inception has worked with around 100 emerging and established, international and UK artists and curators.

Cor Blimey Artists slip on their curating shoes as they each select one guest artist to partner with for Relay. The ensuing dialogue between work bounces within Relay as each 'pair' of artists exhibit side by side. From these collaborations, unexpected associations venture out and connect across the whole of the show. The exhibition shall explore a range of themes and trends that proliferate in contemporary art today. This range will cover the distance of subtle similarities and narratives passing between works to contrasts in themes and aesthetics. All finding expression and relevance through the vitality of a shared connection in thought.

Relay will present a variety of artworks; painting, drawing, photography, performance, printmaking, installation and ceramics by established and emerging artists from the UK and around the world.

Rosalind Davis, painter and Core Gallery Manager, says this about Relay,
"The idea for the exhibition came through a desire to allow our studio artist members to become their own mini curators and collaborators and for the exhibition to be a celebration of the achievements we have made at Core Gallery this year since opening in April 2010. The artists and artworks that have been selected are diverse and thought provoking. It is going to be a thrilling exhibition"

Davis invites mentor and fellow painter Graham Crowley, one of the most distinguished living painters in the UK today. Both painters project the historical, social and political backgrounds which infuse their painted environments with the identities of those who inhabit these physical environments but are absent from the painted scene. We're left with a distilled extraction of human psychology through environment.

Other examples of topics examined in Relay are an exploration of coding by Cor Blimey Artist Elizabeth Murton and her guest, artist Jenny Wiener who shapes her work from a desire "to understand the numerical systems that we create to organize our lives". Murton relates to these numerical systems through material and process. She is interested in "the linear visuals that are formed as materials are manipulated under pressure in a process such as weaving."

While Cor Blimey member Neil Kelly and his guest Vanessa Smith both explore flatness of line and colour in strange domestic scenes or banal landscapes. The flatness in their work reveals the tension and mystery in what can be termed ‘ordinary'.

New Core Gallery associate member, Jane Boyer extends an invitation to Annabel Tilley. Their collaboration for Relay entitled Extreme Narrative explores interrupted identity. Their contrasting approaches: idea/fact, abstraction/reality, gestural/graphic combine to create the friction of a spinning coin with elements from both sides visible at once. Boyer says, "through pairing my work with Annabel's, I've actually found a meaning to one of my works which I was struggling to find on my own. This show has been really stimulating."

New sculpture and video by 7 artists across in response to the Greek myth of Sisyphus. The exhibiting artists all explore notions of the absurd, futility and circularity in their practice whilst simultaneously displaying an immersion in the process, be it material or conceptual.

In Greek mythology Sisyphus was the king who for his crimes was subjected to the ceaseless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain only to watch it fall down the other side, and to repeat this for all eternity. However it is Sisyphus’ approach to his hopeless fate that rouses interest and why the myth is so frequently revisited in literary interpretations. The French Absurdist, Albert Camus, refers to Sisyphus as ‘The Absurd Hero’ concluding that:

“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one’s burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy”.

Nick Bailey’s work inhabits a realm of mild disappointment and temptation: the apparatus that compose the work entice through traditionally tactile objects such as buttons, switches, handles and hammers. These often readily recognisable and archetypal objects provide a launch pad to understanding notions and concepts behind the work, using both a simple, charming language of familiarity and the more intricate language of whimsical desire and self-restraint.

The work draws the audience into questioning their conventional role; a viewer is compelled to gauge whether it is acceptable to physically engage with the work, whilst coming to an understanding of what the physical form of the artwork offers. One is reminded that, at best, this still only amounts to physical contact with an object or objects, and while the ‘toucher’ may be momentarily rewarded with some form of reaction or consequence this is only a superficial disguise for base positive reinforcement.

Bailey graduated from Wimbledon College of Art in 2009 receiving the Landmark Award in the same year. Bailey was also named as one of Catriona Warren’s top graduates of 2009. Exhibitions include ‘Hand or Eye’ Adjacent Gallery (2008) and ‘New Artwork’ Et Cetera Gallery (2007). Bailey lives and works in London.

Alexander Bates is inspired by the human desire to create order out of disorder. His practice can be seen as both a reflection of this need and also through the use of scale, materials and context in individual pieces, a way of undermining and rebelling against this compulsion.

In recent investigations, Alexander has simplified his methods, combining the repetitive and accumulative approach used in old artworks with more direct and quicker pieces. This is an attempt to not only enrich and vary his artistic output but also forms a personal enquiry into what defines something as a “work” of art and questions whether an object’s worth is reflective of its duration.

Bates has studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and The Slade, graduating with an MFA in 2008. Bates has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, recent exhibitions including: ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ Arsenal Gallery, Poznan (2010), ‘The Neutrality of this Section is Disputed’ Giatrakou 28, Athens (2009), ‘After the Curtain Falls’ Wolstenholme Projects, Liverpool. In addition to his studio practice, Alexander is also co-founder, editor and contributor for quarterly Art zine “Impulsive Random Platform”. In 2008 Bates was nominated for the Adrain Carruthers Studio Award. Bates currently lives and works in London and is a visiting lecturer at The Slade.

Jim Bond is best known for his large scale kinetic sculptures and installations. Bond uses the human condition as a springboard for his mechanical works. Often reductive and subtly humorous these works highlight the circular nature of the everyday. Often the cold mechanical aesthetic of these works is at odds with the very human content evoked.

Bond has been exhibiting both nationally and internationally for over 10 years. More recent projects include: ‘Assembling Bodies – Art, Science & Imagination’ Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, Cambridge University (2010), ‘Creatures Great and Small’A22 Gallery, Kinetica, Budapest (2009), ‘Domestic Appliance’ Flowers East, London (2008). Bond trained at Middlesex University and Bezalel College of Art, Jerusalem, Awards include The JD Fergusson Award and The Juliet Gomperts Trust Award. Bond lives and works in Yorkshire and is also a visiting lecturer at Nottingham University.

Through his work Rodney Dee explores notions of ritualism and the connections held between physical action and transcendence. Whilst working predominately in video and basing works around the body, Dee looks to explore one’s ability to exceed boundaries, and move between different spaces.

In the context of Sisyphus Dee has been particularly drawn to notions of gravity both as an elemental force acting upon the rock and it’s trajectory, as well as the broader readings of this myth in which the rock denotes the sun rising and falling in the sky in accordance with daily solar activity.

Dee also notes an interest in the perpetual nature of this act in relation to some higher purpose: “For wherein most rituals offer the allusion of transcendence; Sisyphus’ own efforts at pushing the rock are a testament to his absurdity – continually reinforced with every failed attempt. As a result his description as an ‘absurd hero’ is well deserved, for whilst he never reaches the apex of the hill, he is never fully released from the cycle either and therein lays an opportunity to try again”.

Dee gained his MA from Wimbledon College of Art in 2008 and has exhibited throughout the UK, recent projects include: ‘(N)everland’ The Nunnery, London (2009), ‘Drawing Room II’ Royal West of England Academy, Bristol (2009), ‘Signs of Life: Part II’ Colliers Wood, London (2008). Dee currently lives and works in Bracknell, Berkshire.

JooHee Hwang’s personal experience of finding herself in unfamiliar surrounds has lead her to questioning notions of space and territory. What she now describes as ‘subjectivity of space’ is explored in her vast sculptural installations.

“After leaving my warm nest what I discovered was the subjectivity of space. It appeared as though we are belonging in the same frame of space and time, in fact, we are living in completely different worlds depending on who we are and how we perceive the space. That is to say, the definition of the space can be varied by one’s own perception”.

Hwang’s interest in Sisyphus lies in the notion of a world within a world. For Sisyphus, the mountain became a world within itself, a new reality.

Hwang trained at Hong-ik University, Seoul and recently gained her MFA from The Slade, London. Hwang has exhibited in both London and Korea, more recent projects include:
‘Surface/Time/Space’ Crypt Gallery, London(2009), ‘Foyer Project’ Fusion Art, Kingston (2009) and ‘Space within a Space’ Woburn Research Centre, London (2008). Hwang currently lives and works in London.

Process and repetition play a major role in the development of Matthew James Kay’s work. Through this largely sculptural practice and research Kay explores themes of the transcendent everyday - a (potentially hapless) quest for fullness of life in the face of the mundane.

This is manifest in works which balance repetition and nothingness with purposeful action and creation, and which walk a line between brokenness and wholeness, between dissatisfaction and hope, doubt and faith. Kay also expresses an interest in the idea of the making process as ritual or a meditative engagement with experience. From this perspective visual poems are created that join together to map exploration of the uncomfortable process of living, a beautiful, frustrating, joyous, holy, painful, funny process of transformation and becoming. These works have most recently taken the form of recyclable temporary sculptures and installations in cardboard, and animated videos.

Kay attended Loughborough University and recently graduated with an MA in Sculpture from The University of The Arts London. Kay has exhibited throughout the UK, recent projects include: ‘Not Holding the String’ A&E Gallery, Brighton (2010), ‘Dead Time and Negative Space’ William Goodenough House, London (2009), ‘Intersections’ The Nunnery, London (2009). Kay lives and works in London.

Adopting an experimental and material led approach to her practice Rachel Price's work is concerned with investigating the dynamic between our material and our conceptual worlds often through the pairing of image and form. Price works on the assumption that our physical experience of the world helps inform our conceptual formation of it, i.e that they should not be viewed as mutually exclusive.

Alongside her studio practice Price works as an independent curator providing opportunities for emerging and established artists to produce new works in response to challenging curatorial themes, providing opportunity for artists to question the context of their practice. In 2009 Price co-curated ‘Skinflint’ at the Arthouse, Lewisham deliberately restricting the materials the selected artists worked with to encourage inventiveness in the midst of the economic downturn.

Price graduated from the University of Reading in 2006 and has exhibited throughout the UK. Recent projects include: ‘Planning Permission’ Squid & Tabernacle, Dalston, London (2010), ‘Skinflint’ Lewisham Arthouse, London (2009), ‘The End is the Beginning is the End’ Central Gallery, University of Reading (2009) as well as collaborative projects including ‘Live Sculpture’ with Release the Hounds Production Company (2009).
Price currently lives and works in New Cross, London.

Core Gallery Interviews: Interview with Graham Crowley

Interview with Graham Crowley

It is a pleasure to interview Graham Crowley, one of the most distinguished living painters in the UK today. Born in 1950, Graham Crowley studied at St. Martin’s School of Art London 1968-72 and Royal College of Art London 1972-75, and has held significant teaching posts including Professor of Painting at the RCA (1998-2006).

His paintings span a vast variance in style from the appropriationist art of the 70s to his brilliantly luminous landscapes of the present day, tracking a fundamental narrative with political, cultural and personal histories within them.

Crowley is one of the guest judges for the forthcoming ‘Open Competition at Core Gallery for Deptford X 2010’, where eighteen artists have been selected from an outstanding pool of entries from across the world. I speak to him to find out; his views on the education system, ‘modern art’ and what it was like to be a student in the revolutionary 60’s.

Eighteen artists were selected from an outstanding pool of
entries from across the world by Graham Crowley, the UK’s
most distinguished living painter, Matt Roberts of Matt Roberts
Art and Kate Jones, Marketing Director of John Jones.

Jonny Aldous, Eleanor Bowen, Tom Butler, Mr Clement, Robin Dixon, Louisa Durose,
Marenka Gabeler, Alison Hand, Alyson Helyer, Anna-Maria Kardos, Simon Leahy Clark,
Jin Han Lee, Marion Michell, Laura Moreton-Griffiths, Edd Pearman, Daisy Richardson,
Liz West and James Wright.

The group of selected artists includes a number of winners of the Jerwood drawing and
painting prizes, Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, John Moores and the Selfridges Art
Exhibition: Anticipation. Many are graduates from The Royal College of Art, Chelsea, The
Slade, Camberwell and Central St Martins.

The artworks comprise painting, sculpture, photography, textiles and drawing
Three of these artists will additionally be selected for a further exhibition at Core Gallery in 2010 to be
announced at the opening.

About the artists:
Jonny Aldous: Jonny was shortlisted for a-n magazine’s emerging artist award 2004. Since this nomination
the artist has exhibited at numerous galleries across the UK, most recently in the Children of the Reservation
exhibition, held in Bristol this year. His latest works express a sense of freedom and play and form momentary
flights of fancy.

Eleanor Bowen: Eleanor’s established career as an artist is centred around her drawing practice, which is mostoften expressed through modes of collage. This, for the artist, is a way of dealing with thought as a
simultaneous process with the ambiguity and instability of personal narrative. Eleanor has previously held
residencies at the Royal Shakespeare Company (Newcastle) and the Centre for Drawing project space
(Wimbledon College of Art).

Tom Butler: Tom Butler uses second-hand postcards as miniature environments in which to create sinister and
fantastical scenarios. Tom graduated in sculpture from the Slade three years ago; this year he has exhibited at
the Barbican Arts Group Trust open show and at the RM Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand.

mr clement: mr clement recently graduated from the Royal College of Art with a masters in Communication, Art and Design. Taking inspiration from comics, popular culture, porn and classical music, the artist seeks to soften the traditionally highbrow fine art by mixing it with popular sub-culture from the West and the East. Working in the medium of figure design, mr clement attempts to create a direct and pure way for people to understand art, centred on the concepts of simplicity and fun.

Robin Dixon: Robin was selected to exhibit at the Salon ’09 at the Project Space, Vyner Street, and before that has long track record of London contemporary art shows, with multiple exhibitions at the Nunnery Gallery and the Seven Seven Gallery. His painting practice draws its inspiration from small details of found photographs. The artist is attracted to strong structural elements and abstract shapes, forming a background scene to be inhabited by figures.

Louisa Durose: Louisa’s paintings are formal or ceremonial in manner and seek to address feelings of ‘autrui,’

Marenka Gabeler: Marenka is a graduate from the RCA and her projects have taken her on residencies in
Japan, Syria and Majorca. Exhibiting internationally, her work is held in high profile collections such as Alison
Jacques Gallery, Caldic Collection and Torch Galler, the Netherlands. Layering pain on a canvas like masks
onto a face, the artist works with a process of covering and revealing. Openings are found that lead to an inbetween world, creating new formal connections and figurative possibilities.

Alison Hand: Alison Hand graduated from the RCA in 2001. Since then she has exhibited at many spaces
both in London and further afield, with shows in Germany and Hong Kong. British Airways features in her list of collectors. Her paintings prise a gap between promise and reality; they are invested with utopianist idealism
whilst remaining characterized by displacement and fantasy.

Alyson Helyer: Alyson is interested in mythological figures, universal archetypes, alchemy, monsters,
amorphous hybrid creatures, deities and many more. In her work she captures fleeting impressions of these
monsters by making the creative process a mix of conscious and unconscious decisions and chance
happenings. A graduate of Chelsea College of Art & Design, Alyson has exhibited this year at the Barbican Arts Group Open, and at the Praxis Gallery, London, 2009.

AnnaMaria Kardos: Aimed at collectively inhabited localities, AnnaMaria’s work reveals, negotiates and
activates awareness for our immediate terrain. It reflects on mechanisms that underlie the institutionalised
everyday – authority, discipline and hierarchies are embedded throughout. The artist was born in Hungary and
now lives and works in London, where she has had much success, exhibiting frequently in a variety of
contemporary art spaces in the city.

Simon Leahy-Clark: Exhibited with and shortlisted for the 2008 Jerwood Drawing Prize and with a solo show in Japan last year, Simon’s career is already well established. His work is characterized by an innovative
relationship with his medium; the artist works with newspapers which are stripped of their informative qualities, drawing attention to the qualities of the material itself. The resulting artworks offer a quiet and contemplative refuge from the noise of everyday life.

Jin Han Lee: A Korean artist Lee gained an MA in Fine Art from Central St. Martins in 2008 after relocating to London from Seoul. This year the artist was selected as a finalist for the Guasch Coranty Painting Prize,
Barcelona. Jin Han Lee’s visual practice is an attempt to undermine both Renaissance perspective and
Greenbergian Modernist flatness by combining both in the single work of art.

Marion Michell: Marion’s art touches on childhood, on growing up and its anxieties. The artist uses techniques
traditionally linked to a child’s world working with papers, wool and artificial hair to make shoes, figures and
dresses from scratch. This year saw the launch of the artist’s first solo show at The Arthouse, Wakefield.
Marion is a graduate from Central St. Martin’s School of Art & Design with a first class degree in critical fine art practice.

Laura Moreton-Griffiths: Laura’s drawings explore how sentiments towards the countryside are shaped by art
and culture. The artist looks for traces of landscape and rural tradition in the urban modern world. Laura is a
graduate of Camberwell College of Arts and has been shortlisted for the 2010 Jerwood Drawing Prize.

Edd Pearman: Edd graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Fine Art Printmaking. This year he was included in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in addition to showing in exhibitions in the Aspex
Gallery, Portsmouth, and in the Museu da Cidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal. Edd also works as curator,
curating shows at both the John Jones Project Space and the Mark Jason Gallery, both in London. His recent
works utilize uniforms from national organizations as reference to subvert the often-celebrated cool precision
that uniforms imply in order to suggest other dimensions, whether brutal, chaotic or lethal.

Daisy Richardson: The subject of Daisy’s paintings is the psychological space of a claustrophobic interior
containing mutating objects. The artist seeks to paint in such a way as to pull the viewer in, in a slightly
unsettling way. Daisy has an international exhibiting history, with recent exhibitions in Beijing, France, Ireland
and the UK as well as a solo show in Antwerp last year.

Liz West: Sheffield based artist Liz makes intensely coloured installation, video and photographic works from
arrangements of found materials and consumer goods. Earlier this year Liz took part in the April Fool! show in Leeds Shopping Plaza, part of an Art in Unusual Spaces exhibition. The artist is currently co-curating an
exhibition of her private collection at Leeds City Museum.

James Wright: James Wright graduated from the Royal College of Art. His work uses a vocabulary of symbols and motifs, often from historical painting but many of his own making, to denote the themes of original works which the artist revisits. James Wright was singled out by Kay Saatchi in the 2008 Selfridges Art Exhibition: Anticipation as well as Jerwood painting and drawing prizes as well as being shortlisted for John Moores 25. James recently completed a residency at Gloucester Cathedral, culminating in two solo shows: As It Was In the Beginning and Memento Mori.

Core Gallery Artist Elizabeth Murton presents Can, an interactive installation representing Core Gallery in the Deptford X festival 2010.

Using over 1300 used cans as material, Can (2010) creates something spectacular out of the by-products of common life. Consisting of a circular architectural structure, from which lines of cans are suspended as threads, Can builds a wall of fabric out of an everyday object in multiple. By creating a cloth of round cans, Murton teases the viewer by highlighting the inherent three-dimensionality of woven fabric, in spite of its initial two-dimensional appearance. Can’s constructive nature is a key part of the work. By making construction visible, attention is placed on the notion of constituent parts. Cans, once discarded as useless, become the unexpected building blocks of our surroundings.

Can presents a multi-sensory environment that appeals to sound and touch, as well as sight; gaps between the cans allow light to filter and bounce off the metal, creating a shadow-play on the floor. People can enter Can to escape the outside world. Both the subtle sound of the cans’ chiming and the play of shadow on the floor conjure up a nightscape distinct from the busy streets and bright light of the surrounds. Can creates a separate calming space; when you emerge, the contrast jolts the viewer back to the here and now of daily life.

Can is representing Core Gallery for the Deptford X festival gallery plot space. Deptford X is an annual international arts festival, this year held from 23rd September to 3rd October.

Sisyphus: The Absurd Hero

7 artists respond to the Greek myth of Sisyphus through sculpture and video, exploring notions of the absurd, futility and circularity whilst displaying an immersion in the process, be it material or conceptual.

In Greek mythology Sisyphus was the king who for his crimes was subjected to the ceaseless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain only to watch it fall down the other side, and to repeat this for all eternity. It is Sisyphus’ approach to his hopeless fate that rouses interest, the myth being frequently revisited by both visual artists and literary figures.

Nick Bailey’s work uses readily recognisable and archetypal objects as a launchpad to a new realm, one of temptation and disappointment. Using a language of familiarity which stretches to one of whimsical desire and self-restraint, Bailey’s work questions the act of spectatorship. Is it acceptable to engage with the work? At best, this still only amounts to physical contact with an object or objects and remains only a superficial disguise.

Alexander Bates is inspired by the human desire to create order out of disorder, undermining and rebelling against this compulsion. His work attempts to question the definition of something as a “work” of art, as well as questioning the object’s value.

Jim Bond is best known for his large scale kinetic sculptures and installations. Bond uses the human condition as a springboard for his mechanical works. Often reductive and subtly humorous these works highlight the circular nature of the everyday. The cold mechanical aesthetic of these works is frequently at odds with the very human content evoked.

Through his work Rodney Dee explores notions of ritualism and the connections held between physical action and transcendence. Whilst working predominately in video and basing works around the body, Dee looks to explore one’s ability to exceed boundaries, and move between different spaces. An interest in the perpetual nature of the Sisyphus legend comes to the fore in Dee’s artistic practice.

JooHee Hwang’s questioning of the idea of territory results from personal experience: of finding herself in unfamiliar surrounds. She explores a ‘subjectivity of space’ through her vast sculptural installations. Hwang’s interest in the Sisyphus myth lies in the notion of a world within a world: for Sisyphus, the mountain became a world within itself, a new reality.

Rachel Price's work is concerned with investigating the dynamic between our material and our conceptual worlds, often through the pairing of image and form. Price works on the assumption that our physical experience of the world helps inform our conceptual formation of it. As an independent curator Prices provides opportunities for artists to produce new works in response to challenging curatorial themes, questioning the context of artistic practice.

The exhibiting artists are amongst the freshest of the contemporary arts sphere in London and all have well-established careers in the art world, both in the UK and internationally. It is a pleasure to bring them together in Deptford, itself home to a burgeoning artistic community which it is Core Gallery’s intention to reveal.

Core Gallery is delighted to present 'The Eighteenth Emergency', an exhibition that brings together the work of international artists. All of the artists are current Goldsmiths MFA graduates and already have established careers in the art world. The exhibition is curated by Andrew Bryant, Artist, writer and editor of Artist’s Talking, a-n.

‘The Eighteenth Emergency’ is an exhibition of photography, sculpture, installation and video which explores the many issues surrounding masculinity; addressing the violent and aggressive dimensions of male identity.

The show will be accompanied with an Artist & Curators Talk with Andrew Bryant on 4th September.

 In Betsy Byers’ The Eighteenth Emergency, a short novel for boys, Mouse and his best friend Ezzie have come up with 17 action plans for various types of emergency, such as Attack by an Unfriendly Lion. But nothing has prepared them for the 18th emergency: being on the wrong side of Marv Hammerman, every eighth-grader's worst nightmare.  However the real emergency is masculinity itself, something that, in a sexist society such as ours, for which gendered subjectivity is foundational, we are all on the ‘wrong’ side of.  Taking its name from Byers’ book, the exhibition Eighteenth Emergency brings together five artists whose work addresses the violence and aggression, either actual, or implied, inherent in taking up a position in relation to, or within, masculinity.

New Exhibitions

I am about to have a short break and the gallery is having a little breather of exhibitions before we launch into a breakneck series of shows and events in August beginning with a-n's very own Artists Talking editor Andrew Bryant who is bringing a group exhibition , The Eighteenth Emergency into Core Gallery . I asked Andrew a while ago if he wanted to bring a show to Core, confident in his vision, aesthetic, curation and judgement. I am curious to see how Core will once again be transformed .

Also , it shall be interesting to look at the contrast to our recent CSM MA fine art show and whether indeed there is a difference in approach, aesthetic etc

We also have a sculpture exhibition programmed in at the end of October which is also very exciting and shall be very transformative in the space. Rachel is super organised and has the show ready to rock and roll!

Saw the RCA Show at last, painting and sculpture left me a bit cold and bored. I think it would be interesting if a show full of wildly convergent styles, themes , techniques, ideas had some information about the artists rather than a big black wall of silence. I think it would be beneficial. Although there seems to be a trend in art schools to not provide any explanation/statement etc. Art as experience , not art as engagement ……

For my own short break I am currently deciding which of the 5 books I don’t need to take . I have a beautiful Egon Schiele Landscape book which I currently adore, Ways of Seeing by John Berger, How to be an Artist by Michael Atavar ( very interesting and not patronising at all – should be called how to try and balance your life and mental health as an artist! ) Then Pablo Neruda Poetry and Orhan Pamuk’s novel My Name is Red……

AIR member Rosalind Davis is a mixed media painter and graduate from the RCA. She creates melancholic dystopian landscapes that explore human experience and identity. A freelance lecturer and creative practitioner with work in both public and private collections, Davis is also founding member of Core Gallery, an artist led exhibition space in Creekside, the new art hotspot in Deptford, London.

Here she discusses her thoughts on the new coalition government and how cuts to arts funding will affect her personally.

Core Gallery is delighted to present an onsite collaborative experiment in collage, sculpture, photography, drawing, video and performance by four artists currently studying on the MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.

About the Artists:

Kate Janes

My work has been sculpture based for the past five years and has evolved through various stages incorporating large outdoor public events as well as smaller, performative pieces. The work I have chosen for this show is called ‘Hostess’ and consists of three photographs of papier mache heads on sticks which are guests at a fantasy dinner party, where I am the perfect hostess, confident, witty and the centre of attention. This is in somewhat stark contrast to reality and these images depict an afternoon where I called the shots.

Kim Kielhofner

My work is a process that examines my environment and shifts through the narratives that are woven in it. I use these narratives in my work, particularly studying the historical implications of these in how we understand stories, how we remember, and how we place ourselves within them. Part of my process is collecting the remains of my environment (fliers, discarded tickets, receipts, menus) and layering them into a book inserting drawings and notes. I am rearranging, dispersing material in a way where subjectivities can unfold. This process runs parallel to my video practice where I work with fragments of video, some that I have found from the history of cinema and some that I have taken in my environment. Similarly I bring these video fragments together. I bring them together under a narrative, but use timing, pacing, and the quality of the image itself to play off of each other to expand the space and create a layering of histories.

Woven into a series of unstable historical narratives the artwork or art object undeniably exists, enduring only through reading, re-reading and re-invention. What this endurance of the artwork or art object can reveal about the nature of history is central to my practice.

Sarah Gilbert

Most of my work is inspired by real and surreal world, movies and actors, cityscapes and nature. My practice tends to render equivalent two typologies of work: painting and collage. There are ‘two sarahs’ in a way, a serious, controlled one and
a crazy freer one. The minimalist landscapes painted with gloss and oil paint on aluminium or stainless steel sheets and collages, answering to the principles of minimalism, it is question of precision, conceptual coldness and the importance of the physical presence of the materials. Doing collage is more emotional, it is paying attention to details, outlining selected shapes, it is a funny meeting of oppositions, happening at the surface of things.

Furthermore, collage is obviously mostly based on the mode of reappropriation because it is choosing pre-existing forms from different sources you find singular in everyday life. However, my intention is different from entertainment or communication because it
doesn’t serve for needs, I am driving my work to a dimension Heidegger calls ‘an unusual space’, a freed space, ‘clearing a space larger than the typical space’. To approach this particular space, I make an effort of presence of the work, by presence I mean density of manifestation, how to increase the presence (charisma) of the shape shown in its relation with the world (the wall and the space of exhibition, the light, the viewers).

Engine ChatChat is a peer on peer critique and discussion. It is supportive, constructive criticism from considered perspectives. The aim is to question, support and encourage. These are open to all disciplines and anyone interested in participating in or listening to discussions on art-works.

Our next Engine ChatChat (Informal Peer Critique) will take place at 2pm Saturday 20th June at the Core Gallery.

It will coincide with the gallery’s Open Studios, Wilderness & JumbleJumble.To register please e-mail a link to your work online & a preliminary question you would like to ask (this can change) to: coregalleryinfo@gmail.com. Please use "Engine ChatChat" in the e-mail subject line.

Engine ChatChat Informal Peer Critique

Here the group present their work (although others are welcome to contribute). Each artists gives a 5 min presentation discussing and asking a question about their own practice which is followed by an informal group critique. This is meant to be an open, casual event where everyone is encouraged to discuss and share their views on artistic processes.

Engine ChatChat Formal Peer Critique

This is a timed programme when 3-6 artists do a 10/15minute presentation of their work in front of a group. This is followed by a 20minute discussion from the audience, including a mixture of presenting artists & non-presenting artists/contributors.

Jumble-Jumble is an art focused ‘boot sale.’ Come along and buy or sell a piece art work for a snip of the artist normal price. Get yourself a beautiful work to treasure for your home or office or for an unusual gift, from an emerging artist.

Or alternatively, buy or sell some nearly new artists materials from the artists themselves- unused paints or canvas and or for a fraction of the price! Sample the creative atmosphere of Deptford and visit Cockpit Arts and Creekside Artists Open Studios on the same weekend as Jumble-Jumble all in Creekside.

Core Gallery will also feature open studios from the artists at Core Blimey Arts.

Graham Crowley one of the most distinguished living painters in the UK shall be in conversation with Wilderness Artists: Rosalind Davis, Enver Gürsev and Neil Kelly. Wilderness is an exhibition by three of London's most promising emerging artists exploring the idea of wilderness through painting, drawing and installation.Davis, Gursev & Kelly’s works each interpret notions of seemingly abandoned spaces. The results depict urban and dystopian scenes, as if in the wake of apocalypse.

Graham will discuss and explore with the artists the concepts in their works, their notions of Wilderness as well as their own varied and fascinating careers so far in the Wilderness of the Art World!

Wilderness is a show not to be missed, with new works on display from each of the artists.

About Graham Crowley

Graham Crowley is one of the most distinguished living painters in the UK today. Born in 1950, Graham Crowley studied at St. Martin’s School of Art London 1968-72 and Royal College of Art London 1972-75, and has held significant teaching posts including Professor of Painting at the RCA (1998-2006) In April 2008 Graham Crowley had a letter published in Art Monthly ‘Can’t get No Satisfaction’ in which he expressed his concerns about the state of art education in London.

His letter precipitated a national debate both in Art Monthly and the wider art world. His paintings span a vast variance in style from the approprationist art of the 70s to his brilliantly luminous landscapes of the present day, tracking a fundamental narrative with political, cultural and personal histories within them.

Crowley was a judge on the 25 John Moores panel in 2008. As an applicant he has exhibited eight times, winning prizes in 1987 and 2006.

Core Gallery is delighted to present 'The Eighteenth Emergency', an exhibition that brings together the work of international artists. All of the artists are current Goldsmiths MFA graduates and already have established careers in the art world. The exhibition is curated by Andrew Bryant, Artist, writer and editor of Artist’s Talking, a-n.

‘The Eighteenth Emergency’ is an exhibition of photography, sculpture, installation and video which explores the many issues surrounding masculinity; addressing the violent and aggressive dimensions of male identity.

The show will be accompanied with an Artist & Curators Talk with Andrew Bryant on 4th September.

 In Betsy Byers’ The Eighteenth Emergency, a short novel for boys, Mouse and his best friend Ezzie have come up with 17 action plans for various types of emergency, such as Attack by an Unfriendly Lion. But nothing has prepared them for the 18th emergency: being on the wrong side of Marv Hammerman, every eighth-grader's worst nightmare.  However the real emergency is masculinity itself, something that, in a sexist society such as ours, for which gendered subjectivity is foundational, we are all on the ‘wrong’ side of.  Taking its name from Byers’ book, the exhibition Eighteenth Emergency brings together five artists whose work addresses the violence and aggression, either actual, or implied, inherent in taking up a position in relation to, or within, masculinity.

Patrick Morrissey and Clive Hancock

This show is the culmination of a collaborative exercise between Patrick Morrissey and Clive (Hanz) Hancock.

Patrick Morrissey’s work represents elements of his practice initiated whilst studying for his degree at Goldsmiths College. Broadly speaking, Morrissey is utilizing ‘systems’ which are basically geometric/ numeric and ultimately tangential.

This work has sympathy with the neo-concrete/neo constuctivist methodology of the late 20th century, expounded by the likes of Kenneth Martin, Jose Patricio, and others. The title of the show is intended to bind the works together under a theme which may evoke any number of associations with Pop culture, kinetiscism etc. This is deliberate.

Clive Hancock (Hanz) has evolved his method as an ‘outsider’ artist, having had no formal art education. His work again, has its routes in the late 20th century and also the contemporary practice of neo constructivism.

There have been commissions for the Crafts Council and winners of the RBS Emerging Artist Award, Design Selected Award and New Cross Art Prize. They have been involved extensively in Deptford X and Brockley Max international art festivals.
